During the build up to the second world war in the late 1930's, many children had to leave their families and get on a train to leave a busy city and go to the countryside. London tried to evacuate all the children, as the government were worried the city may be bombed. Some children were sent to stay with relatives outside in the countryside, but others were sent to live with complete strangers. In European countries, some children got on a train taking them to a different country, away from the front line of fire. Many never saw their parents again, and had a tough start to life. These Evacuee Costumes are the typical costumes they wore, as they boarded trains, leaving busy cities that were possibly going to be at war very soon. These make great World Book Day and historical fancy dress outfits for all girls and boys.
